讲述一名出身卑微的西西里女孩，在被父亲强J后，不小心放火烧了自己的房子，导致她的母亲和姐姐丧生。随后，她被送入修道院，接受见习修女的教育和训练。本剧同时讲述了她幼年到成年之间的故事。 The novel follows a woman, Modesta, who is born on 1 January 1900 and her experiences though her life in the twentieth century. The text is written for the most part in the first person (by Modesta), but sometimes also in the third person, especially in the first part of the novel.
